“Many in our Kauaʻi community are aware that our current location poses safety risks for those we serve and our staff. As we progress towards a new site, we have received valuable input on what a new jail facility should include to ensure successful partnerships and rehabilitation efforts that reflect our island’s culture and values. A new chapter has been a long time coming and we’re looking forward to improving lives for years to come." - Jerry Jona, KCCC Warden
Currently located next to a busy section of Kūhiō Highway in Līhuʻe, the Kauaʻi Community Correctional Center (KCCC) sits on 9.5 acres of pastoral land. Built in 1977, the facility was originally designed to hold up to a dozen male inmates. It has expanded through the use of temporary housing units that were donated by the county and converted into three cabin structures. KCCC now serves a multifaceted purpose, holding up to 128 men and women with pretrial misdemeanors, pre-trial felons, sentenced misdemeanants, those on probation, and parole violators.
KCCC inmates have played an integral part of the KCCC community service worklines by providing a labor force on numerous projects for county and non-profit organizations. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, inmates occassionally harvested produce, exceeding the needs of the facility's Food Services Unit. As a result, KCCC had donated the surplus of vegetables to community organizations such as senior centers.
SSFM International is leading the design and planning effort for the future site of KCCC. With a strong commitment to transparency and collaboration, SSFM has conducted months of community listening sessions with leaders in businesses, nonprofits, government, and cultural practitioners, to gather input and ensure the project aligns with the needs and values of Kauaʻi residents.
Engagement with the community will continue throughout the project, providing opportunities for feedback and updates. Stay connected by visiting this website for the latest information and announcements as we work together to provide a secure correctional facility for adults in KCCC's custody and care, and enhance community safety.
