At a Glance

The County of Maui Department of Public Works (DPW) is proposing improvements along Lower Honoapi‘ilani Road in West Maui. The improvements are intended to address multimodal safety, accessibitlity and resilience. Three projects are currently in various stages of planning and implementation:

1. Lower Honoapiʻilani Road Complete Streets Improvements.

Extent: Ho'ohui Road to Napilihau St.

DPW is initiating the planning phase of a complete streets project to make the street safer for people of all ages and abilities while traveling on foot, by bicycle, in a personal motor vehicle, or by bus.

 

2. Lower Honoapiʻilani Road Pavement Rehabilitation.

Extent: Honoapiʻilani Hwy to Ho'ohui Road.

This project is scheduled for completion in 2024, with the focus on resurfacing the roadway pavement and addressing other deficiencies such as reviewing the pavement striping and replacing speed tables, signs and damaged guardrails.

 

3. Kaʻōpala Bay Shoreline Erosion Mitigation.

The objective of this project is to address erosion along the Kaʻōpala Bay shoreline by implementing engineered solutions to protect the highway in the short to mid term while longer term solutions are developed.
