Project Overview
Lower Honoapi'ilani Road functions as a major collector providing access to residential areas, beachgoers, resorts and various utility services. The road is used by bus services, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The County of Maui Department of Public Works (DPW) is initiating the planning phase of a complete streets project to make the street safer for people of all ages and abilities while walking, bicycling, in a personal motor vehicle, or on a bus.
In keeping with the principles of “complete streets”, which aims to prioritize the safety of vulnerable users while balancing the needs of all other modes, the County is proposing measures that will calm traffic speeds through the area while providing facilities to improve safety, visibility, and access for people walking and riding bicycles.
The project team will collect and analyze data, study existing transportation patterns, and collect input from community members and stakeholders to identify and design solutions to balance the needs of all users.
