About the West Maui Greenway

The West Maui Greenway (WMG) is a proposed 25-mile multi-use trail traversing the western coast of Maui, connecting Ukumehame in the south to Līpoa Point in the north. The project is envisioned to provide a safe, accessible trail, physically separated from Honoapiʻilani Highway, serving alternative forms of transportation and recreational users. The trail’s separation from vehicular traffic is anticipated to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries to those traveling on foot or by bike. In addition, the Greenway could serve as an essential emergency access and evacuation route, a protective fire break for the communities of West Maui, as well as a potential space for relocating utilities underground. The West Maui Greenway will connect communities throughout the region to destinations such as schools, workplaces, shops, parks, and beaches.

Project Fact Sheet

The proposed alignment of the West Maui Greenway was developed through the 2022 Master Plan Process. This is the proposed alignment that will be studied in the Environmental Assessment for the project. 

The first stage of the project will conduct an Environmental Assessment (EA) of the full proposed corridor. The purpose of the EA is to understand whether the project will have potential environmental and cultural impacts.

Alongside the EA, the project will also pursue environmental permitting for construction of the first phase of the Greenway. Phase 1 of the Greenway is funded by a Federal RAISE grant, awarded to the County of Maui in 2025, and will construct segments 3, 4, and 5.
