The County of Maui Deaprtment of Public Works is proposing to extend Imi Kala Street both north and south from its current extent between ʻEha Street and Mill Street.
The Northern Extension would run from ʻEha Street to Kahekili Highway and the Southern Extension would run from Mill Street to Lower Main Street.
The proposed new road would have sidewalks and bike lanes, as well as vehicular travel lanes and associated utility connections. Intersection improvements will also be provided at all roadway connections.
The project is conceived to provide another connection between Wailuku and Waiehu, to connect Kahekili Highway with Lower Main Street, and to expand multimodal transportation options in Central Maui.
The project has been discussed in multiple plans for Central Maui since the late 1990s. More recently, the project has been included in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (2023) and the Hele Mai Maui Long Range Transportation Plan 2040 (2019).
