The State Department of Land & Natural Resources (DLNR) is leading the Hāmākua Marsh Pathway Project to support ongoing management and restoration of the Hāmākua Marsh State Wildlife Sanctuary. The project is intended to protect marsh wildlife while providing local residents access for recreation and education. It includes features to enhance safety and connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists along Hāmākua Drive and between Hāmākua Marsh and the Kawainui Marsh levee path.

The project is part of an overall vision to create an off street-network of multimodal paths to connect Kailua destinations and green spaces, promote healthy and active lifestyles, provide educational opportunities, and enhance appreciation of the local culture and environment.
